Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director of Exhibition Design, the Academy Museum is looking for an experienced Graphic Design Manager to oversee projects from conception to completion. You will be responsible for implementing the creative strategy and overall design for the Museum’s exhibition spaces. This includes graphic design for print and digital, environmental graphics, collateral, and presentation materials. You will work closely with internal departments and external vendors overseeing accuracy, quality control, deadlines, and budget requirements. You may also oversee freelance designers and interns. The ideal candidate has great leadership skills, is well organized, can meet strict deadlines, and thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

You Will:

  • Conceive original visual materials that are harmonious with the exhibition intent and mission of the Museum.
  • Design and produce a range of print and digital projects including wall murals, didactic texts, and object labels.
  • Support the branding and creative identity of projects through the design of visual materials, while preserving the overall branding and identity of the Museum.
  • Adhere to the Museum’s special needs and visual accessibility requirements (ADA compliance) within gallery spaces.
  • Follow through on creative work from concept to production; juggle various projects and handle tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Manage project workflow while coordinating with project teams and management on schedules, budget requirements, goals, and assignments.
  • Oversee artwork reproductions with the knowledge of resizing, resolution requirements, and touch-ups.
  • Consult and liaise with internal and external partners, production teams, and outside vendors to produce strong visual communications.
  • Be the primary liaison with an external graphic designer for approx. 30,000 sf/ft of exhibition spaces.
  • Manage master panel schedules, follow up on design specifications and material samples, obtain approvals from curators, and communicate back to graphic designers.
  • Oversee external fabricators onsite while they install approx. 45,000 sq/ft of exhibition/graphics fit out.
  • Ensure external fabricators’ construction methods work with rotations and longevity of exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with internal and external exhibition designers to ensure cross-departmental needs and external deliverables deadlines are met.
  • Assist with graphics mock-ups onsite.
  • Prepare digital files for graphic production.

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, fine arts, or related. MFA preferred.
  • 5+ years of design-related work experience.
  • Exceptional portfolio that showcases conceptual, color, and layout skills. Superior typographical skills.
  • Mastery of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Experience in motion graphics is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • A strong portfolio of produced work demonstrating a high degree of creativity, diversity, and productivity.
  • Extensive creative, conceptual, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional experience working independently and effectively with others, managing deadlines, budgets, clients, and vendors.
  • Experience managing print production and knowledge of printing processes.
  • Ability to multi-task and create an organized production schedule that incorporates time for both scheduled and unscheduled projects.
