Welcome to this month’s round-up of Extraordinary Experiences across all experience sectors and around the globe.
July is upon us and with it the promise of sunny days and summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere. It also signals the arrival of a slew of hotly anticipated experiences, from Elvis Evolution at Immerse LDN, which will see the rock n’ roll legend brought thrillingly back to life through the power of generative AI, to the long-awaited opening of the Traitors Live experience in Covent Garden, where fans of the show can connive their way to victory.
Themed attractions are having a moment this month, with a Dexter immersive experience arriving in Shoreditch to mark the launch of Dexter: Resurrection. Expect to be cracking codes and analysing blood smears. Wannabe James Bonds can put their espionage skills to the test at Spyscape, which has landed in London from New York and features challenges created with the help of real life spy trainers from British Intelligence and CIA specialists.
Across the pond, Moment Factory has launched its first permanent scare attraction – Ghost Boat – in Wisconsin’s Cold Water Canyon, which combines video mapping, dynamic lighting, spatialised audio, and live performance into a chilling experience. Speaking of ghosts, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera is returning to the Big Apple this month with an experiential twist. Called Masquerade, attendees must wear black or white and don masks.
Educational experiences are also being given airtime this month, with Weather Extremes in Germany’s Bremerhaven emphasising the need to take a proactive stance when it comes to climate change via 30 interactive exhibits that highlight the effects of global warming. In Paris, the history of the Seine is being brought to life via a VR walking tour of the river that covers everything from the Viking siege and French Revolution to the 1910 flood.
20. Hermès Mystery At The Grooms

Opened 19-29 June 2025
Location: New York, US
Experience Sector: Immersive Retail
This epic experience has been and gone, but it’s so good we had to tell you about it. For 10 days in June French luxury house Hermès transformed New York’s Pier 36 into a quirky pop-up, inviting guests to play detective in a scavenger hunt with a twist. Called Mystery at the Grooms, the theatrically staged immersive experience blended craft, fantasy, and a dash of detective work inside a meticulously constructed house complete with a pantry, dormitory and greenhouse. Once inside you’re tasked with locating a herd of missing horses that have run amok, and need to comb the house for clues, cracking codes and opening cabinets along the way, while logging your answers on a customised Hermès app.
The smallest of details were painstakingly thought through, from the sounds of trotting hooves in the hallways and equestrian detective Mr. Honoré dispensing clues over the phone from Paris, to the colour-drenched themed rooms. There’s the deep red Groom’s Office filled with saddles, and the Wes Anderson-like blue laundry room lined with washing machines filled with silk scarves. The pantry, meanwhile, was filled with hay bales, giant carrots and crates filled with Hermès bags. Proving the brand has its finger firmly on the pulse of experiential retail, the playful and free to enter initiative was a clever celebration of Hermès’ equestrian roots: the brand was founded in 1837 as a harness and saddle workshop in Paris.
19. The Living Room

Opens: 2-11 July 2025
Location: Liverpool, UK
Experience Sector: Immersive Theatre
Taking over Liverpool’s iconic Edwardian Adelphi hotel this month is a kooky, site-specific, immersive theatre experience from North-West-based performance artist Izzie Major, who’s known for bringing artistic experiences to non-theatre spaces and community settings. Called The Living Room, the skit explores the absurd, the ritualistic, the macabre, the feminine and the grotesque. Keen to keep the audience in suspense, little has been revealed about the experience, which partly takes place in the dark and is billed as “an intimate, interactive immersive performance” designed for small groups.
“The living room is a space for connection and reflection, a space for being alive and being together, isn’t it?,” Major said. “Let’s draw the curtains, kiss the television’s gentle glow, close our eyes, drop our jaws and let the welcoming light of the lamp lead us home.” The Living Room follows on from The Bedroom, Major’s 2024 sell-out immersive performance. “We’re proud to host Izzie Major’s surreal and immersive theatre experience. This unique production is a powerful blend of creativity, emotion, and theatrical innovation that truly captivates its audience,” a spokesperson for the Adelphi hotel said.
18. The Door In Question

Opened: 19-29 June 2025
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Experience Sector: Immersive Entertainment
Another experience that’s just finished its run but merits a mention in this round-up for the powerful message behind it is The Door in Question. Taking place in a Melbourne shopping mall in June, it’s the brainchild of artist Troy Rainbow, and is based on his real experiences with schizophrenia and identity loss. This is psychosis performed. Comprised of intimate VR spaces inside a defunct shopping centre, a guided audio walk took attendees into a second building for a series of intense immersive experiences. Designed to be undertaken alone, the multi-sensory experience harnessed sound and smells as well as visuals, from religious texts to cryptic notes written on walls, to conjure its creator’s experience with mental illness.
The 90-minute extended reality experience was at times intense and deeply unsettling, but that was the point. Blending immersive theatre with escape rooms, virtual reality and mixed reality, Rainbow billed it as “an immersive journey into psychosis”, and used both his own experiences and those of his schizophrenic mother as inspiration. The story centres around four delusional characters who each believe a man named Anton was killed in a different way. It featured a series of surreal rooms, from a lab with a dentist’s chair and a security room to a dingy kitchen and a creepy kid’s bedroom. Throughout the experience, voices crop up from unexpected places via directional speakers, so it sounds like a voice in your head.

You can expect to navigate a maze by touch, identify scents and flavours in a blackout, face your fears in an anti-gravity room, and test your reflexes in a laser obstacle course.
Every sensory token your team collects during the experience turns into a donation to a local charity supporting people with disabilities. Having made a splash in 35 cities worldwide, Dallas is the latest city to get the Sensas treatment. Some of the challenges are undertaken in complete darkness, allowing participants to discover their ability to adapt when their other senses are restricted. Each of the themed rooms features a workshop based on one of the five senses, and those who need it will be given hints and clues to help them complete the challenges. Sensas was founded in 2015 by Silvana Popovic and Grégory Lafon in Marseille.

The so-called ‘Valencian Sistine Chapel’, the church of San Nicolás on Cavallers Street, will launch a permanent immersive experience on 1 July called La Luz de San Nicolas. Merging history, art, spirituality and technology through lights, music and projections, the installation was created by Global Menta and Mediapro Exhibitions, a division of the Mediapro Group. Nine months in the making, creating the show involved 83 pieces of technical equipment, 14 synchronised projectors, 640 hours of nighttime installation, 200 hours of audiovisual programming, 3.8 billion pixels rendered and more than 1.5 million files generated.
La Luz de San Nicolás will offer a tour divided into three sensory experiences through a combination of videomapping, light, music, and digital interaction to teach visitors about the history of the building. The first part features videomapping on the baroque vault that will enhance the fresco paintings of the church. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in North Carolina is hoping to redefine the museum-going experience with an ambitious multimedia exhibition that transcends the limits of visual art to engage multiple senses. Collection, Reframed: We Are Here, Beyond Vision pairs immersive video and sound installations by New York artist Janet Biggs and North Carolina-based dancer and choreographer Davian Robinson, who is visually impaired, and a host of other collaborators with works from the museum’s permanent collection. The result is a reflection on the human body in varied states: candid, abstracted, constrained, or in motion. In the show the museum itself acts as co-creator of the work, rather than just a display space.
“It’s as if the museum has been reconfigured to be more inclusive of those who may not have perfect sight,” says art critic Barbara Pollack. On 12 July there will be a live performance called Misregistration by Davian Robinson that experiments with inclusive choreographic techniques, embracing the strengths of people with disabilities and incorporating touch, sound, and echolocation as methods of communication. The show features over 60 artworks by the likes of Degas, Giacometti, Matisse and Warhol that show the human body in various states of form and flux, highlighting both its capabilities and constraints. In Data Sonification, Biggs translates works by Picasso and Barbara Hepworth into spatialised soundscapes.

2. Masquerade

Opens: July 2025
Location: New York, US
Experience Sector: Immersive Theatre
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated gothic musical, The Phantom of the Opera, is back in the Big Apple, only this time with a new immersive twist. Called Masquerade, the finer details of the show, based on Webber’s original musical, are being kept under wraps to maintain the element of surprise. What we do know is: attendees must dress in either black, white or silver, or a combination of these colours. Faces must be concealed by masks, which you can either bring with you or buy on the door. High heels are discouraged due to the experience taking place across treacherous underground terrain, with some of it staged in the dark.
Taking the form of a masked ball, Masquerade is set in 19th century Paris and takes place in a former art shop on West 57th Street, which has been turned into an elaborate, multi-floored setting for the performance. It will include all the songs from The Phantom of the Opera, but might take the form of a haunted house-like experience, where guests walk through the scenes of the show. Speculation is rife but hard facts are thin on the ground right now. Launching in London’s West End in 1986, Phantom made its Broadway debut two years later and maintained its residency in New York for 35 years, hosting its last performance in 2023.
